RUNNERS AND RIDERS AT THE HARLEY GALLERY

Real Studios has designed an exciting new two-year exhibition for the Harley Gallery on the Welbeck Estate, celebrating the equine passions of the aristocratic Cavendish family who have lived there for centuries. In the 17th century, William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle built a grand riding school on the estate and wrote ground-breaking manuals on horsemanship, while three of his 19th century descendants became leading figures in horse racing. Real Studios' scheme, set within the Treasury Gallery, mixes family portraiture along with early 20th and late 19th century photography, with key artefacts and imagery from the Portland Collection. A life-sized replica racehorse forms a striking centrepiece to the display, with the family's various jockey silks used as vibrant backdrops.
