Real Studios has woven compelling narratives around mental health perceptions and treatments with fascinating objects and original art works to create a multi-textured new exhibition for Bethlem Royal Hospital, the world famous UK psychiatric hospital in Kent, founded in 1247. Set within a refurbished listed Edwardian building, the HLF-funded museum and gallery opened in March 2015. Within a largely open-plan space, Real Studios has devised a visitor journey that explores the variety of attitudes and behaviours towards mental health through the ages via artefacts, texts and original as well as specially commissioned artworks and installations, placing the patient voice and experience to the fore. Sophisticated audio-visual and interactive elements are used judiciously to heighten awareness of patient, physician or family experiences.
